The interior of an apartment intended for a young couple who divide their lives between Split and the United States. The clients wanted a space that combines the calm of a Mediterranean ambiance and the restrained elegance of a hotel interior.
The apartment is located in an older building, and its spatial design stems from the inherited curved form – a constructive element that has been reinterpreted as a central organizational motif. The semicircular volume has been adopted as a spatial landmark that defines the character of the entire interior. At its center is the kitchen, positioned as the focal point of the living area, around which the dining room, living room and terrace naturally line up, creating a flowing and functionally connected space.
The interior concept is based on a balance of contrasts. The cool shades of the local landscape – the tones of stone, sea and pine – are balanced by the warm wood that envelops the floors, walls and furniture. Such material consistency creates a feeling of softness and continuity, imbuing the space with comfort and peace.
The bedroom is conceived as a reinterpretation of hotel privacy. Instead of the classic separation of the bathroom, the space is designed as an open unit – the sink and shower communicate with the rest of the room and the outside space through panoramic glass. This erases the boundaries between functions, and the impression of spaciousness is further emphasized.
Special attention was paid to the wall coverings, which have a multiple role: they aesthetically define the space, hide doors and integrate service facilities into a single architectural whole. At the center of the floor plan is a wooden totem – a vertical element that allows for circular movement and naturally divides the day from the night zone.
The biggest challenge of the project was the execution of the details with a high degree of precision. Hidden doors, continuous cladding and flawless joints required close cooperation between all contractors and a high level of technical control, especially due to the specificities of the old building.
The entrance area has been designed with the same care as the rest of the apartment. It is covered with white relief ceramic tiles that unobtrusively connect to the kitchen surfaces and the wall covering behind the fireplace, creating an impression of purity, elegance and spatial connection upon entry.
The result is an interior that speaks quietly but leaves a strong impression.
